Tid Bit(e) Tuesday
Vitamin D🎉 It’s a pretty important vitamin/hormone that keeps your body healthy and your probably not getting enough of it! We all know the best way to get vitamin D is through the sun but unfortunately (especially in Michigan) we don’t get that much sun. Also people are afraid of the sun when their in it and slather themselves in sunscreens which block vitamin D!! This is the one vitamin that I definitely think everyone should be supplementing in the winter months because it does so much in our body!!
1. Immunity- vitamin D plays a role in your healthy gut microbiome which helps control immunity and keeping bacteria and viruses from taking over
2. Calcium – vitamin D levels correlates with calcium levels. If vitamin D levels are where they should be then your body can hold onto more calcium and build strong bones. A lack of vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis because of the lack of calcium
3. Brain health – there’s a reason you feel tired and not as happy in the winter and that is because there is no sun and no vitamin D being absorbed! Vitamin D effects brain function and definciencys are linked to mood disorders and depression
Another way to get vitamin D is through fatty fish and mushrooms!! Here’s a really simple mushroom recipe for you:
Garlic and Thyme Roasted Mushrooms
Ingredients:
1 package mushrooms
3 tbsp. ghee
½ tsp. thyme
2 large cloves of garlic
1 tbsp. ghee for pan
Directions:
- Clean and cut the stems of the mushrooms off
- Place the ghee, thyme and garlic into a glass bowl and melt in the microwave for 15 seconds. Stir together
- Put the 1 tablespoon of ghee into a cast iron pan and place it in the oven and preheat oven to 400F
- Oven heated, carefully grab the cast iron from the oven and place your mushrooms in with the stems facing up.
- Add the ghee mixture to each one
- Place back in the oven for 20 minutes or until mushrooms are cooked through
